Express Entry — Federal Skilled Worker

Points-based (CRS)

~480-540 for general draws (2024-2025)

The main pathway for skilled workers. Candidates are ranked by the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) and top-scoring applicants receive Invitations to Apply (ITA) every 2-4 weeks.

Scoring: Max 1,200 points. Core factors (age, education, language, experience) = up to 500 points for singles. Spouse factors up to 40. Skill transferability up to 100. Additional (PNP, job offer, French) up to 600.

Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

Points-based (CRS)

Same pool as FSW

For workers who already have 1+ year of Canadian skilled work experience. Same CRS scoring as FSW but no education assessment required.

Scoring: Same CRS system. Canadian experience gives significant points advantage (up to 80 core + transferability bonuses).

Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)

Hybrid

Varies by province. Some PNP streams have separate draws.

Provinces nominate candidates based on local labor needs. A PNP nomination adds 600 CRS points — virtually guaranteeing an invitation.

Scoring: +600 CRS points on top of your base score.

Key Requirements

Language

CLB 7+ in English or French (IELTS 6.0+ all bands). Higher scores = dramatically more points.

Education

Post-secondary education. Foreign credentials must be assessed by a designated organization (WES, IQAS, etc.).

Experience

1+ year of continuous skilled work in the last 10 years (NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3).

Age

Maximum points at age 20-29. Points decrease after 30, zero after 45.

Funds

Proof of settlement funds (~CAD 14,000 for single applicant, 2025).

Health

Medical exam required. No serious health conditions.
